Before you move in your new Home

Congratulations on your new Home! This is where the excitement kicks in when you are about to shift to your new home and also sadness when you leave your old home behind with beautiful memories left back with it. Most of us Kiwis struggle to buy a new home especially with the prices here in Auckland and it’s even more difficult when you only have an average income of two and kids to look after. The crime rate in New Zealand over all is very low compared to other countries across the world and house robberies are also on the decline with better crime management systems in place. So, before you move in to your new house let’s have a look at few things that you might want to consider.

  • Security system – The most important thing when moving into a new home is safety of the family. Check to see if there is a security system set up at your new home and is it operating as it should, cameras in the house or outside, smoke alarms, etc. As soon as you pick up the keys for your new house make sure to change the locks on the exterior doors or get someone to change it for you. You never know who might have lived in that house with keys distributed and especially if the house was ever placed on rent previously. This will give you some peace of mind with new locks being installed. Also, another one of your very first steps is to change the security alarm pin and if not sure ask the agent or previous house owners to help you set it up.

  • Essentials – Set up a phone line if not already in place. Important to have your internet connection sorted weeks before you move in because it does take some time with internet service provider being booked out and in today’s world things can get tough without internet. Energy switchover is also required with the previous owners name change to the current owner as well as gas supply. Notify all your relatives, bank, post office, and schools etc. of the new address change. Organise new house and contents assurance so that you are all covered as soon as you move in.

  • Cleaning the house – Before you step into your new house get pest control done to get rid of bugs and protect your property from pests for a longer period of time if done correctly. Look around the house to see if there are paint patches that need to be touched upon, electrical switch covers need changing? Dishwasher in place? Carpet stains? Etc. Always good to clean the house before you step in and it reduces cleaning time after the move is completed and you can sit back enjoying a cold one on the couch watching the sunset. Hire some professional cleaners if you are not feeling up to it.

  • Saying good bye to the old home and the memories – It sometimes is very hard for people to move to a new home as they are so attached to the home they have been living in for a long time. The decision has been made and you’re ready to say goodbye to your old home and if budget allows throw a barbecue party at your old home for one last time to cherish all the moments spent together under one roof and a toast to the new memories to be created in the new home. Once again happy moving everyone and make sure to get in touch with The Moving Squad for your next move or to discuss any other services.
