Beginners Guide to Moving in Auckland

We often receive enquires from customers who have no previous moving experience or haven’t moved in a very long time.

If you fall in either category, this guide may help .We’ve complied a list of things to consider or discuss with us:

  1. Do you need assistance with partial or full packing or unpacking? If there are any items or areas which you specifically need packing with (such as artwork or fine china), we can usually fit in a partial pack on the same day as your house move or a day prior.
  2. Let us know about access or parking issues at BOTH sites- things such as overhanging tree branches. telephone cables or narrow driveways can result in a costlier move if not matched with the right size truck.
  3. Oversize items such as double door fridges, pianos or spas need special handling with equipment and extra men, best to let us know in advance so we come prepared. If items need to be hoisted over balconies, we usually have to bring extra long straps and 3 or 4 men so advance notice helps with planning.
  4. If you’re settling houses, its best to allow the full day for the house move or at least budget for it. We come across settlement delays every Friday and this can easily add hours to the bill unfortunately. We recommend speaking to your solicitors ahead of time to arrange access to the garage of your new home to allow us to unload whilst settlement is taking place – this can save hundreds off the bill. If you’ve got concerns over settlement falling through, talk to us and we can pre-arrange storage as a contingency.
  5. If you have valuable items which you have concerns over, talk to us about transit insurance options. We can usually provide you a quote within 24 hours.
  6. Need packing boxes? We can provide free advise on the right type if packing materials to use of you are self-packing and can arrange delivery of these items with 2 business days throughout Auckland.

House Packing Tips

Packing is never a simple task. We often come across customers who are ill-prepared, have left packing too late and have had to cut corners to get everything ready before we turn up for the move. Poor packing is the number 1 cause of damages in transit and also the number 1 reason why transit insurance companies decline claims for damages. After having packed and moved thousands of homes over the last 8 years, here are out top packing tips:

  1. Invest in sturdy, professional grade and suitable packing materials. There is a common misconception that all you need to pack are banana boxes and tape. This could not be further from the truth. Sturdy boxes, bubble wrap, corrugated cardboard rolls, acid-free wrapping paper, shrink wrap and mattress covers are all worth their weight in gold and are inexpensive compared to repair or replacement cost for your valued contents. Speak to our packing experts on 0800 086 683 to discuss packing materials which you can order through us. We can also deliver your packing materials within Auckland (fees apply) and can recommend the right materials to suit your needs.
  2. Always have a priority box with keys, remote controls, cables, Wifi modems, unopened mail, a roll of toilet paper( Yes you read right!), kids activities, medication and first aid kit. You’ll need to carry these with you in your vehicle so you know exactly where it is at all times. Keep screw, bolts and nuts in sandwich bags with labels in this box, with allen keys and tools needed to re-assemble your furniture.
  3. Label all rooms and all boxes with brief description of contents. These WILL reduce your stress when unpacking and trying to locate things in your new home. Our professional, expert and friendly moving team will place all boxes in corresponding rooms to make it easier for your to unpack.
  4. Mark boxes as fragile and top-stack where appropriate, do not over-fill and place heavier items first with lighter ones on top.
  5. Dont stress about disassembling and re-assembling furniture or uninstalling and reinstalling white wear. Our moving team can give you a hand and sort this out in minutes.
  6. Keep an eye on weather conditions. Request our shrink wrapping service to protect couches and furniture from the rain and order mattress covers well in advance. These are single use due to hygiene reason which is why we don’t carry them as standard.
  7. We recommend unpacking your drawers if its flat-pack/MDF furniture or antique. Whilst its ok to keep drawers full for solid wood drawers, it does help the lighten the load. Filing cabinets should always be emptied out (unless they are anti-jam) as jams caused during the move can be a nightmare to sort out.
  8. We do not carry gas bottles, fuel, paint, corrosive chemicals and car batteries as these are Dangerous Goods. Please make alternative arrangements for these.
  9. If you have expensive wooden furniture and antiques, talk to us beforehand about our corrugated cardboard wrapping service. Our movers can easily do this before moving and this adds an extra layer of protection to the standard blankets which we ALWAYS use.
  10. Always wrap television, artwork and paintings in 2-3 layers of protective material. If this is too much for you, talk to our moving consultants on 0800 086 683 and we can organise our expert house packers to get this done. We use the highest grade materials can can have up to 5 layers of wrapping materials to cover valuables such as paintings and artwork.

We hope these tips will make your house pack a little easier. Give yourself enough time and start packing early. Things such as books, toys and old clothes can be packed well in advance so have a packing plan and schedule in place.

8 Easy to Follow Moving Tips from Auckland’s Expert Packers and Movers

Plan in advance

The earlier you organize your house move the better! Weekends are a popular house moving time in Auckland so give us a call to pencil in a time as soon as you know and we’ll happily hold it for you without any booking fees.

Be boxed up

Use moving boxes to pack your possessions to ensure their safety and a quicker move. For smaller, heavier items like books, crockery and cd’s please use ‘book boxes’ and for larger ornamental items or cushions and linen use ‘tea chest’ boxes. If you are overwhelmed by the amount of packing to be done our friendly removalists can help. Ask us about our professional Auckland packing and moving service.

Parking / Access

Make sure with your neighbours or your building manager that there will be suitable parking for the moving truck. If you are moving from a house it may be simply a matter of parking a car (or two if you can!) in front of your house. For apartment buildings in Auckland there is usually a designated loading zone for removalists but make sure to reserve this in advance along with the lift. Your building manager will also have special blankets/covers to protect lifts and its very important to arrange this well before the move.

Spring Clean

Moving house in Auckland is a great opportunity to declutter and donate unwanted items. Speak your local Salvation Army to arrange pickup or we can deliver it for you. For all other rubbish and unwanted goods check with Auckland council about booking in a free hard rubbish collection. Recycling furniture and clearing hard rubbish before your house move can save you a lot of time and money.

On a tight moving budget?

Minimize your house moving costs by moving the smaller items yourself and leave the bigger items to us. Quite often people do prefer to move some boxes, clothing and smaller electrical items themselves.

Should I hire my own removal truck?

We have found that for a great many house moves it is actually cheaper to use a reliable Auckland removalist than to hire your own truck. On a weekend in Auckland truck hire can be up to $280 per day not including petrol or the surcharge for kilometres. Also you have the added stress of driving the truck, finding sufficient blankets and straps to protect your furniture, and most importantly finding friends to help you!

Four seasons in one day!

No one can predict Auckland weather but you can always plan ahead for worst case scenario and keeping an eye on weather report. If it’s a cold and wet Auckland day have plenty of packing materials like plastic covers for beds and couches. These can be purchased from any of the reputable Auckland storage company nearby or by ordering it from us on 0800 086 683. We can also bring your order along on your moving day to save on delivery fees. If you’ve got muddy access or unpaved driveways, you can buy drop-sheets from your local Mitre 10 or Bunnings Warehouse for movers to use.

If your Auckland house move is in the middle of summer , stick to 2 simple rules – keep hydrated and don’t forget to slip-slop-slap.
